The Casino

Manresa

The Casino of Manresa is one of the most well-known Modernist buildings in our city.

Ignasi Oms and Alexandre Soler i March, both architects, were the main exponents of Modernism in Manresa.

Since its inauguration in 1906, the Casino functioned as a social club for the upper classes of the city. In addition to the gaming rooms that eventually gave it its name, the building also featured reading rooms, ballrooms, a café-bar, and even a tennis court. Unfortunately, Ignasi Oms’s original project remained unfinished due to financial problems.

The practice of gambling was completely outlawed during the Franco dictatorship, as it was considered contrary to the regime’s national-Catholic values. From that moment on, the Casino’s activity went into a gradual decline until its definitive closure in the 1970s. The poor condition of the building led to the emergence of civic movements demanding its purchase and restoration by the municipal authorities. Thus, in 1999, the building was reopened after a complete renovation, this time transformed into a large public library and cultural center.
