The cradle of the Spiritual Exercises
In one of the rocky shelters so characteristic of the landscape of Manresa, protected from the elements yet offering a magnificent panoramic view of the mountain of Montserrat and the River Cardener, Saint Ignatius of Loyola spent a period of time meditating and writing the first version of his famous Spiritual Exercises.
Over the years, this simple cave gradually became the most monumental and sumptuous building in the city. The imposing sanctuary erected upon the original rock has undeniably become Manresa’s quintessential Ignatian site, as well as one of the most universally recognized landmarks of the Jesuit world.
At the Sanctuary of the Cave of Saint Ignatius, landscape and architecture blend in a surprising way, forming an artificial façade on the hill of Sant Bartomeu, one of the most visible features at the entrance to Manresa. Its decoration, combining the Baroque style of the Manresa sculptural school with the Modernism of Josep Llimona, has become a distinctive hallmark that sets this sanctuary apart from other heritage sites in our city.
The Sanctuary of the Cave transformed its interior decoration in 2021. A series of mosaics was installed to adorn the eight side chapels of the Church of the Cave of Manresa.
