Saint Francis Church

Manresa

The Church of Sant Francesc de Paula is a Baroque-style temple built in the early 17th century under the patronage of the founder of the Order of the Minims. Originally, this church was part of the Sant Francesc convent, founded in 1625. The temple was designed in 1638 by the master mason Joan Font. Its consecration and blessing could not take place until 1683.

In 1835, due to the disentailments carried out by the liberal government of Mendizábal, the friars of the convent were forced to leave the premises. Thirteen years later, the facilities were transformed into a girls’ school run by the Sisters of the Company of Mary. In 1885, the façade underwent a comprehensive renovation in a historicist style inspired by Romanesque architecture, designed by the architect Bernat Pejoan i Sanmartí. Unfortunately, a significant part of these decorations was destroyed during the fires caused by the revolutionary events of the Tragic Week in 1909. The flames also affected the interior of the temple, burning much of the Baroque artwork in the main nave. At the end of the 20th century, the church was converted into an auditorium.

Today, it is used only on special occasions during the city’s festivities.
