The Plana de l’Om is a square located in the heart of Manresa’s historic center. Its name refers to the majestic elm tree (Ulmus minor) that has presided over the square for decades. Thanks to its central location and the many shops and historic buildings that surround it, it is one of the city’s most lively and popular meeting places.
Beyond symbolizing the expansion of Manresa’s “Golden Century”, marked by the construction of the “new town” within the 14th-century walls, the square also preserves notable examples of the city’s Baroque heritage, such as Ca l’Oller. Here, visitors can also admire the façade of the former Grau Brothers’ workshop, outstanding representatives of the Manresa Baroque school. Today, the building houses the Espai Plana de l’Om, which serves as a venue for cultural events and exhibitions.
On the corner with Carrer del Born stands the Esteve Pharmacy, a perfect example of a Modernist-style establishment, featuring colorful stained glass, fine woodwork, and wrought iron. Finally, at the foot of the elm that gives the square its name, visitors can see “A l’ombra” (“In the Shade”), a sculpture by Ramon Oms depicting a woman sitting on a bench beneath the tree, reading a book in its shade.
