The new Museum of the Baroque in Catalonia is a national museum that places Manresa at the epicentre of the interpretation of Catalan Baroque art, and allows for the rediscovery and appreciation of the heritage of this period in the country.
Throughout the different rooms, there are around 200 works of art on display, including paintings, sculptures, altarpieces and decorative arts from different museums and collections around the country. The museum houses the works of some of the most representative artists of the 17th and 18th centuries in Catalonia, such as Joaquim Juncosa, Antoni Viladomat, Agustí Pujol and Francesc Tramulles. As well as pieces by artists from the Baroque school of Manresa such as Joan Grau and Josep Sunyer.
The Museum of the Baroque in Catalonia establishes a new concept of art museum. It links the contemplation of artistic works with immersive audiovisuals and light and sound effects, based on a discourse that allows the Baroque to be captured and understood, extolling its splendour, luminosity and passion. The visit culminates in a room that presents the high point of the experience, a space that transforms itself into an audiovisual immersion that transports visitors to the Catalan Baroque territories.
The museum is located on the first floor of the former Colegio de San Ignacio. A square-shaped building organised around a large neoclassical cloister, built between the 18th and 19th centuries and catalogued as a BCIN (building of cultural interest). The architectural restoration of the complex has transformed this century-old institution into a 21st-century facility.
