La Séquia Park

Manresa

With the aim of overcoming the terrible drought that Manresa suffered in the mid-14th century, local authorities decided to build the Sèquia, a hydraulic and irrigation canal that could permanently supply the city with water from the Llobregat River. Its 26-kilometer route, with only a 10-meter gradient, begins at the well-known “resclosa dels manresans” (“weir of the people of Manresa”) located in the municipality of Balsareny. Its waters end up flowing into the Parc de l’Agulla, within the territory of Manresa. Along its course, the Sèquia crosses several streams, valleys, and ravines thanks to around thirty aqueducts and underground channels.

At the same time, a parallel path was laid out alongside the canal. Traditionally, this path was used as a communication route to carry out maintenance on the entire Sèquia infrastructure. All this work was carried out by those responsible for the Sèquia Board, the historic managing body of the canal.

Today, this path has been adapted so that all visitors who wish can enjoy the route on foot or by bicycle. Crossing forests, orchards, and crop fields, one can discover the great natural wealth of the Bages region. Likewise, near the path, various places of great historical, cultural, and heritage interest can be found, such as the hermitage of Sant Iscle de Bages, the Iberian settlement of Cogulló, or Balsareny Castle itself. The route can be completed in a single day, as its characteristics do not require great physical effort. Even so, it may also be attractive to discover it through short walks that start and end at the same point along the route.

Six hundred years after its construction, and without losing its original function as the main source of water for Manresa and other towns in the region, today we can also enjoy the Parc de la Sèquia in a different way, thanks to the significant range of leisure activities that take place there.

The facilities and spaces that make up the Parc de la Sèquia are the following: the Sèquia, the Parc de l’Agulla, the Parc de la Sèquia Visitor Center, the Can Font Water Center, and the Manresa Water and Textile Museum.

Casa de la Culla
Carrer de la Culla s/n – 08241 Manresa
info@parcdelasequia.cat

La Culla is a farmhouse dating back to the 13th century, located at the foot of the Royal Road that once connected Manresa to Barcelona. It once possessed 300 hectares of land filled with forests, pastures, and farmland, eventually becoming one of the most important farmhouses in the city. The arrival of the phylloxera plague, which severely affected grape cultivation in the region, marked a turning point in La Culla’s history, beginning a period of decline that ended in the early 1950s, when the house became completely uninhabited. Today, the site houses the Bages Learning Center, the Regulatory Council of the Pla de Bages Designation of Origin, and educational activities of the GeoParc. Since 2016, it has been integrated into the Parc de la Sèquia.

Visits can be arranged via email.
