Amigant House

Manresa

The Amigant House is an imposing building of medieval origin located in the alley that emerges from the intersection of Amigant Street and Sant Miquel Street. Its initial construction took place between the 13th and 15th centuries, consisting of a ground floor and three upper floors. Its main door is made of large ashlar blocks and voussoirs. At the top of the façade, one can admire the Amigant family coat of arms, consisting of two arms extended horizontally, shaking hands, and accompanied by two golden stars symbolizing friendship and good fortune.

The Amigant family became, over the course of the modern era, one of the most powerful lineages in the city. Some of its most illustrious members held important positions in the territorial power institutions, such as the Royal Audience of Catalonia. In early 16th-century Manresa, there was a group of families that controlled the economy and local institutions. Most had prospered through their dedication to artisanal and commercial activities. Some members of these lineages, such as the Peguera, Canyelles, Ferrer, and Casamitjana families, also had connections with Saint Ignatius.

When Saint Ignatius of Loyola arrived in Manresa in the spring of 1522, the merchant and city council member Pere Amigant was the head of the family. The couple Àngela Seguí and Pere Amigant developed a close friendship with the future saint. This relationship materialized in the assistance and support the couple offered to Saint Ignatius during his harsh penances, hosting him in a room of their house at the foot of the Church of El Carme. Years later, this house would be transformed into the Chapel of Saint Ignatius the Sick.
